| (FIFA.com) Wednesday 31 December 2008 Print Email my friend ShareWhile it is true that not everyone delivers on their promises, that is not an accusation that could be levelled at FIFA.com. We pledged to bring you exclusive interviews with some of the biggest names on planet football this year, and we were as good as our word. Ever dreamt of seeing Lionel Messi, Kaka, Ronaldinho and Cristiano Ronaldo is the same line-up? Well, now you can as they, and many others, are all here on FIFA.com - and just a click or two away. One of new additions this year was the popular "Ask your idols" section, which gave FIFA.com users the chance to have their questions answered by some of the game's top names. Among the many to oblige were Ryan Giggs who, while sharing his thoughts about life on and off the pitch, told us: "My hero is Nelson Mandela. I've been fortunate enough to meet him a couple of times. He was really clued up on his football and he knew me, so that was just unbelievable." Also happy to field our readers questions were ex-footballers Rui Costa and Gianfranco Zola, while another Manchester United icon, Cristiano Ronaldo, gamely took part only a couple of weeks ago. Asked to describe himself in just one word, the self-assured Portuguese replied with a laugh: "Brilliant!" Talking a good game Of course, it was not only our readers who were asking questions of the leading lights in football. Throughout the year, our journalists interviewed esteemed figures like Dutch duo Edgar Davids and Roy Makaay, the Portuguese Deco, Frenchman David Trezeguet and Italy's Fabio Grosso. Nor did we neglect the men on the sidelines, with Chelsea's Brazilian coach Luiz Felipe Scolari and current Mexican boss Sven Goran Eriksson among those who shared their thoughts with us in 2008. And there was more. During the course of the Men's Olympic Football Tournament in Beijing, we spoke exclusively with Argentinian icon Lionel Messi. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime thing, so you have to make the most of every second," the Barcelona star told us just hours after winning his gold medal. Another South American legend happy to speak with us in China was bronze medal winner Ronaldinho. "Obviously I'm delighted to have gone to such an important and prestigious club as Milan. They've signed me because they know my game and I can do out on the pitch," said the clearly excited Brazilian of his move to the San Siro. Another to go on the record was Salomon Kalou. Among other interesting facts, the Chelsea and Côte d'Ivoire winger spoke of his fondness for Spanish football: "It's my dream of mine to play there one day, as I love Spanish football. It's exciting to watch and to play. I also dream of seeing an African side win the World Cup." And the list goes on: Roque Santa Cruz shared with us his experiences in England, Juan Roman Riquelme spoke of the responsibility of being a father, and Alexandre Pato of dealing with a tumour at the age of ten. So many great names and so many interesting exchanges. So why not browse through the extensive list of interviews shown in the column on the right and enjoy them in their entirety? You can also rest assured that in 2009 we'll continue to bring you new and entertaining dialogues with leading figures from right across planet football. And that's a promise. Add your commentRating: 4.5Rating.init(985721); In term of award in 2008 season ronaldo is suppose to be the world best player, but in term of performance in the field messi suppose to be a world best player, because in every match he play either in de national side or laliga messi was rated as the highest performances, statistically.Posted by ahmed02, Nigeria on 02/01/2009 at 08:23To MasterNK10, - Abu Trika is already nominated with Amr Zaki from Egypt (Wigan Athletic) as one of the best 5 players in Africa for year 2008.. The results of the votes will be announed after two weeks from now... Initial results show that Abu Trika has more chances to win than Didier Drogba and Essien.. El-Ahly is named as The African club of the 20th century; as El-Ahly collected 73 pts, 30 points away from his closest rival...- Its our point of view, that we see him a big player... because he led his country to win the AFC for the 2nd time, and the african champions league for the 3rd time in 4 yrs.. let me ask u, Did Spain win the World Cup? What would Egypt do more than winning the african cup of nations in year 2008, then will play The Confederations cup in South Africa among strong teams as Italy and Brasil... I believe you will be impressed by Egypt's performance in such championship..Posted by ahmedhossam8, Egypt on 01/01/2009 at 19:34I like how they put Edgar Davids instead of Ronaldinho! hahah smooth.Posted by pontifex711, USA on 01/01/2009 at 18:06i think cristiano had the best year but messi is better and this season he will win the awards and la liga with barcaPosted by chan9chan, USA on 01/01/2009 at 01:262008 was a glorious year if you were either Spanish, or a Manchester United fan. The 2009 Confederations Cup will be a very exciting tournament guaranteed. And whats with all this talk of Mohamed Aboutrika and Egypt? Why dont you win something outside of Africa and then we'll talk.Posted by MasterNK10, USA on 01/01/2009 at 00:19Messi is a far better player than cristiano ronaldo if you actually know the soccer game well its pretty clear.Posted by SamFSH3710, USA on 31/12/2008 at 21:24I would have to say that Critiano Ronaldo is the one that had the best year. The guy scored over 40 goals and they said he was the first United player to win it since '68. The guy is pretty sick, and I'm not even a United fan. I pull for City if anything cause of my boy Nery Castillo.Posted by Rafa2000, USA on 31/12/2008 at 21:02y is edgar davids in the picturePosted by ricardo999, Portugal on 31/12/2008 at 18:162008 wasn't a good year in my point of view. lot's a super stars hurt or injury for a long time. Hopefully 2009 will be a better year. Everybody know that this year of 2008 best player there's only two good players that could become the best of 2008, c. ronaldo and messi but of course c. ronaldo will win it but i agree that messi is better but c. ronaldo won almost everything this year.Posted by Brasiliero, Canada on 31/12/2008 at 17:49Me i'd say Kaka and Messi.I'm a big fan of AC Milan. So I mostly see all the games and I've seen Kaka take some beautiful shots most of them were goals.Messi too,Henry gives him passes that other players coludnt catch. And he still caughgt up and scored.Posted by br.andy10, USA on 31/12/2008 at 15:30View all comments » (Total comments 12) Comment.init(985721); (FIFA.com) PhotosNews
